Geological Survey of Slovenia

Geological Survey of Slovenia is a public research institute established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. Our purpose is to provide knowledge about the Slovenian geology. This task is not made easier by the Slovenian territory being a juncture of three large tectonic units: the Alps, Dinarides and Pannonian basin, a consequence of which is extraordinarily heterogeneous geology.
Geological data represent a basis for solving numerous questions of national importance, such as: protection of health and environment, drinking water supply, mitigation of natural catastrophic events, urban planning, prospecting and assessment of mineral deposits, etc.
Geological Survey of Slovenia collects and stores geological data within a modern geological information system, but mostly in more than 30.000 expert reports and research projects stored in its archive.

Programmes:

Sedimentology and mineral resources:

  • Lithology of the rocks in Slovenia, their petrology, mineralogy and age
  • Study of the genesis and diagenesis of sedimentary rocks (sedimentary environments and their dynamics)
  • Sedimentary rocks and sediments as mineral resources (natural and building stone – e. g. karstic limestones, flysch sandstones, schists, gneisses and the magmatic rocks of Pohorje, dolomites, as well as industrial rocks – chert, lime, cement, ...)
  • Organic sediments as energy resources (coal – Velenje basin, Posavje Folds)
  • Clays, phylosilicates and tuffs
  • Mesozoic limestones and dolomites (mostly Karavanke Mts. and western Slovenia)
  • Clastic sedimentary rocks, mostly Tertiary of the north-eastern Slovenia
  • Metamorphic rocks along the Periadriatic Lineament
  • Recent marine, lacustrine and fluvial sediments as objects of anthropogenic pollution

Regional geology:

  • Solving geological problems of chosen regions
  • Regional studies in the entire Slovenian territory
  • Global studies – linking the Slovenian geology with the geology of other European countries

Ground water and geochemistry:

  • Establishment of current chemical and physical characteristics
  • Establishment of the distribution and form of ground water in the environment
  • Establishment of hazardous natural impacts, as well as current and historical anthropogenic activities (e. g. municipal, toxic and radioactive wastes, mines and population)
  • Determination of expert grounds for ground water management and hydrogeological bases for the protection and use of ground water
  • Implementation of existing research methods and their further development to fit the Slovenian circumstances, considering its special characteristics and geological heterogeneity
